[Week 11, day 4] [video]

[There are several things going on at once in this video post here. For one, there's several nomads hurrying around their camp, and they look as if they're very agitated by something. They're quite pointedly not going anywhere near where the hitomi is recording from, though occasionally they glance in that direction with worried looks. Over in a corner is a fresh bloodstain, though there's no body visible anywhere. Near the bloodstain are some suspiciously large scorch marks as well, and it looks almost as if someone took a flamethrower to some of the grass and bushes. One side of a tent is partially burned as well, though it looks like the fire was put out fairly quickly.

The camera pans around a few times, and anyone familiar with the area should be able to tell that it's not too far from Hisato, and in fact the city is just barely visible on the horizon at one point. After panning around the camp a few times the hitomi picks up a rather loud and annoyed sigh, and suddenly it's put down on the ground.

And then it becomes clear that the hitomi was being held by a very, very large dragon. Said dragon is also very displeased at the moment, most likely because there are several ropes tied around her front legs at the moment. So she's resigned herself to sitting on the ground and fuming quietly.]

I said I would pay for the cow.

[Now she considers the device in front of her with more interest. She's never seen anything like this before in her life, and at first she had thought it was just a jewel of some sort, but one of the braver nomads took a moment to explain what it was to her. Of course, the whole idea was laughable to her. Sending messages instantly? Even the fastest courier dragons took time to get anywhere, so she failed to see how something like this could work. Still, she wanted to test it, if only to see if she could find some use for it.]

Would somebody send my Granby to come clear this mess up? These silly humans are not listening to reason, and they will not accept my capital. They do not believe me when I say I will stay here without being tied up, as if I am a common thief or something.

[If anything, she sounds more disgruntled about being tied up than about what these nomads think of her.]

[Taking a moment to compute.]
Sep. 11th, 2010 10:30 am (UTC)
[Rin does not quite believe her eyes. She's seen a lot of weird things in Kannagara so far, but this kind of breaks the mold.

It's an unworldly creature, and it speaks. It doesn't look like anything from the mythology she's grown up with, either, which seems to be a theme going on here. Well, maybe it looks a little like a dragon, but not really.

Mostly, though, it talks like a human. Not the kind of phrases a Nekomata or Hitotsume-Kozō will throw at you, but regular speech.]
Sep. 11th, 2010 10:31 am (UTC)
4/4 [voice]
[Then, finally, she gets her act together. Enough to attempt speech.]

What... who are you?
Sep. 11th, 2010 02:21 pm (UTC)
[She huffs in response to that. Rin isn't the first person to ask that today, and she's getting very bored with explaining it. In her world people outside of the military could go their whole lives without seeing a dragon, but they still knew that they existed. She's starting to wonder if everyone in this world is just that slow.]

I am a dragon, what else would I be?
Sep. 11th, 2010 02:33 pm (UTC)

[That shuts her up as she thinks for a while. Unusual-looking dragon. Not that she's ever seen one, but the drawings and woodblock prints she knows show them a little differently.

Still, in her time in Kannagara, she's come to adopt a kind of "anything is possible" attitude.

She blinks, still a little too perplexed to remember to set the transmission back to voice, so Iskierka will see her looking a little dumbfounded.]

Never personally seen a dragon, that's all.
Sep. 11th, 2010 02:39 pm (UTC)
[She notices that, but she also notices something else too: Rin's nationality, or at least what she thinks is her nationality.]

Most people in Europe do not see one, unless they fight in a war. Are you Chinese? Temeraire told me that dragons live in the cities in China, so you should have seen a dragon before, though they may have looked different.
Sep. 11th, 2010 02:54 pm (UTC)
[Well, that is some interesting information, the differences about the nationalities.]

Not Chinese; I'm Japanese. Though I never heard about there usually being actual dragons on the mainland -- they're more... the stuff of legends, where I'm from.

But yeah, the ones I saw in pictures look a little different than you.
Sep. 11th, 2010 02:59 pm (UTC)
There are hundreds of different breeds of dragons, you must have seen a different breed. I do not know if Japan has dragons or not, but it is possible that they live apart from humans. It is very difficult to fit inside of a human city unless it was built to accommodate dragons. Pray tell, what did the ones you saw in the pictures look like?
Sep. 11th, 2010 03:05 pm (UTC)
[Looks at the video, contemplating.]

Well, they were... longer. Kind of snake-like, just a little -- but with feet. Pretty short legs, and the front legs were far apart from the hind legs. They may or may not have wings, but I don't think they're usually as big as yours.
Sep. 11th, 2010 05:54 pm (UTC)
Oh! I have seen dragons like that, yes. They are simply a different breed- though they do have wings.
Sep. 11th, 2010 06:04 pm (UTC)

[Shrugs, a little helpless.]

No idea whether they actually exist where I'm from. They might.

[That she says partially to sort of pacify this big dragon, and also because, well, she knows people who are immortal. Which is also not an everyday thing, and certainly not a known thing in her world. So maybe dragons were hiding somewhere, too.]
Sep. 11th, 2010 06:09 pm (UTC)
[She seems placated by this. Rin doesn't seem so scared of her anymore as well, which is a nice change.]

What is your name?
Sep. 11th, 2010 06:13 pm (UTC)
[Rin is surprised by how normally she's talking to the dragon, herself. But, well, it's hard to keep freaking out over a longer period of time, especially if the very unusual looking person... creature... person you're talking to is being quite civil.

Ah, the name question, of course. Rin is reluctant, but she swallows her fears down. She wants to keep swallowing them down.]

... it's Rin.

And yours?
Sep. 11th, 2010 06:28 pm (UTC)

[There is a sense of pride when she says her name, too. She chose it herself, and she's very happy with the choice.]
