[Week 16, day 1] [dream]

It feels funny. You can feel every little movement against your skin: the slight breeze, the shifting of the oversized cotton button-up shirt draped over your too-small body, the grass between your toes, everything. It's almost overwhelming, just how much you can feel everything. But it makes sense, this skin is a lot softer than your scales used to be.

You look down at your hands. Instead of ten sharp claws, there's ten stubby fingers that can lay out straight or curl up into fists. You flex them experimentally, wondering how they can work as they do. Then you look down at the rest of yourself, all the way down to your feet, where you wiggle your toes to make sure they work.

Somehow you stay upright, but how you manage it is beyond you. Two legs are somehow more complicated than four.

You make your way over to a nearby river. Kneeling down beside it (another interesting human behavior, even) and peer in. A face that isn't your own meets you in the waters. Instead of the sleek, graceful face of scales and horns you're used to, it's a soft, slightly pudgy face. Your hair- you actually have hair for the first time in your life- is short and curly, though you're pleased to find that it's the same shade of dark red that your scales used to be. It looks almost boyish, you realize, though almost all of the women in the service have short hair anyway so it isn't a big deal to you. Long hair would just get in the way.

Your eyes are the same as always, though: yellow, with a slitted pupil instead of the round one humans seem to have. The familiar feature is what makes you realize that this is definitely you, not somebody else.

You tug at your hair with your new friends, and you're surprised to find that it does hurt if you pull too hard. Then you try mashing your cheeks together, and you find that you make funny faces doing so, but the remarkable thing is how malleable the skin is.

Idly you realize that you look young, possibly as young as Roland. How old was she again? Twelve? Thirteen? Somewhere around there.

You try to look over your shoulder, but you find that you don't have the same range of motion that you did with your old neck. You nearly fall over, but you manage to stay upright by actually turning some so you can look. You know this man, he's the one who's been with you since birth. He hasn't changed at all, and that familiar smile makes you feel right at home.

You get up and run towards him, somehow without stumbling, and when you reach him you jump into his open arms.

Somehow he lifts you up in the air, and you realize just how big he is now. He used to look so small, barely as tall as your longest claw was long. But now he would tower over you, if he weren't holding you in his arms. The contrast is startling to you.

Then it hits you: this is your first hug.

It feels nice.

[As the dream fades away, Iskierka doesn't wake up fully. It's a nice dream, unlike anything she's ever dreamed before, and she's not too keen on waking up yet.

At some point she becomes aware that her Hitomi is recording, and she just rolls over sleepily and reaches to turn it off as she mumbles something.]

Five more minutes, if you will, dawn has not arrived yet.

[voice] some time later, in the morning
[Rin swears she has a justification this time. The last time a dream of Iskierka's was broadcast, it was a nightmare, and Iskierka was upset by it. It was probably lucky that Rin was around. Isierka had set fire to some trees as it was, and most generally you really don't want an angry dragon on a rampage.

This is what Rin tells herself as she's sucked into this dream. She's confused for a split second at it being about a human girl, but then she comprehends as she experiences the curious feeling of being a human for the first time. Between that and the hug, it's a very heartwarming dream. It makes Rin smile.]

Good morning, Iskierka. How are you today?
Dec. 14th, 2010 09:58 pm (UTC)
[It's lucky that Rin waited until a bit later to message Iskierka, as she is a lot less crabby now. She's been awake for a while and has just finished her breakfast, so she has lost the sleepiness to her voice when she speaks.]

Good morning, Rin. It has been a good day so far, I have no complaints. How about yourself? Has this day been good to you so far?

[She actually isn't too bothered by this dream, though. The curiosity of being a human isn't a shameful thought to her, so she isn't particularly bothered that others have seen it.]
Dec. 16th, 2010 10:04 pm (UTC)
It's been a good day so far, thank you.

[As good as any day in The Life Of Rin is ever going to get. Which can be pretty damn good, because after everything, she hasn't unlearned how to enjoy life, still -- but on the other hand, there's always been a sort of shadow accompanying her, ever since three years ago. (And has it been three years already? It was winter when she came to Kannagara, and now it is winter again. That should make a year, even if she thinks that if she concentrates, she might still be able to count the weeks.)

It's become so normal that it is odd to consciously think about it. She doesn't often, and she finds that this is not really a bad thing. It's not that it doesn't matter, but it's not something that's any use dwelling and spending energy on.]

Things sure have quieted down. It's... refreshing.
Dec. 17th, 2010 08:31 pm (UTC)
Yes, a short break is just what everyone needs.

[The emphasis there was on 'short,' though. Iskierka got bored easily, and within a few days she would be complaining about a lack of things to do. Though for now she did have something to keep her occupied, and she actually remembered it at the mention of peace and quiet.]

Oh yes, I was thinking, are there troubles with bandits in this world?
Dec. 17th, 2010 08:59 pm (UTC)
[Iskierka can't see it, but that question makes Rin look at the Hitomi very questionably. She knows Iskierka somewhat by now and fears that she might be Up To No Good.]

In Yomisato, and I've heard of some roadside robbery happening.

... why do you ask?
Dec. 17th, 2010 09:14 pm (UTC)
[Good job, Rin. You have learned that Iskierka ALWAYS has something in mind. But hey, at least this time it's somewhat good.]

I was thinking, bandits make a living on stolen goods, do they not? So, it would not be unethical to steal what they have stolen, correct?
Dec. 17th, 2010 09:22 pm (UTC)
[Now, that is an interesting thought. Rin has to concede that there is some truth to that -- but before she admits that, she has a question.]

... why would you want to do that?
Dec. 17th, 2010 09:36 pm (UTC)
I would like to have a pavilion built before winter, but pavilions are expensive to build properly.

[This is the closest she will get to admitting that she is not making enough money to fit her lifestyle. And really, stolen goods are free for the taking in her mind.]
Dec. 17th, 2010 09:39 pm (UTC)
So you intend to keep the money that was stolen from other people to yourself.

[Oh, Iskierka. Rin isn't exactly a saint, herself, but this isn't even a very complicated moral question.]
Dec. 17th, 2010 09:44 pm (UTC)
How would you suggest going about returning it? It is not as if names are written on the money.
Dec. 17th, 2010 09:53 pm (UTC)
Well, no, but... surely, there must be a way!
Dec. 17th, 2010 10:04 pm (UTC)
[She considers this for a moment.]

Well, would the law enforcement pay for our services, if we were to capture bandits and other law-breakers?
Dec. 17th, 2010 10:22 pm (UTC)
[Ponders that, though only very shortly.]

... no idea.

[Because honestly, she doesn't. There hasn't been occasion yet, really. Which is probably a little surprising, everything considered. She should look into that.]
Dec. 17th, 2010 10:39 pm (UTC)
If they can be traded in for a reward, then we can take the reward and leave the stolen money for everyone else to work out. Then everyone is happy.
Dec. 17th, 2010 10:44 pm (UTC)
... I guess that's true...

[Something about this logic still seems iffy to Rin, but she can't point her finger on what.]
